Directions (1-5): Read each sentence to find out whether there is any grammatical or idiomatic error in it. The error, if any, will be in one part of the sentence. The alphabet corresponding to that part is your answer. If there is ‘No error’, the answer is (e). (Ignore errors of punctuation, if any.)

Q1. To do that job (A)/ you need to be mentally disturbed (B)/ anthropologically different than (C)/the rest of humanity (D)/ No error (E)

A
B
C
D
No Error
Solution:
Here, the error is in C, where ‘than’ will be replaced by ‘from’. We use ‘from’ right after ‘different’. In case there is a noun after ‘different’, only then we use ‘than’ after that. Such as,
‘I would like to buy a different book than this’. Hence option(c) is the correct option.
Q2. The Ulster Defence Association has (A)/recently hinted that it (B)/may be prepared to attack (C)/ on dissident republicans (D)/No Error (E)
A
B
C
D
E
Solution:
When ‘attack’ is used as a verb in the sentence, we don’t use ‘on’ with it. But when it is used as a noun, only then we place ‘on’ after that. In this sentence, (D) has an error. Here, attack is used as a verb. So, option (d) is correct answer.
Q3.We ordered for coffee (A)/after a long journey to be told (B)/ if we weren't lunching (C)/they wouldn't serve us drinks (D)/No Error (E).
A
B
C
D
E
Solution:
(A) section is grammatically incorrect in the above sentence. Since ‘ordered’ is a transitive verb and therefore object comes right after it. For example, ‘he ordered a cup of tea’. Option (a) is correct answer choice.
Q4. American troops spread out (A)/ across the area on yesterday (B)/ to investigate what had (C)/ happened and questioned witnesses (D)/No Error (E)
A
B
C
D
E
Solution:
Part (B) of the given sentence is wrong. Usage of ‘on’ before ‘yesterday’ is grammatically incorrect. As before yesterday, two days before yesterday, the day after tomorrow, today, etc. ‘on’ is not used. So, option (b) is correct answer.
Q5. All her life she's (A)/ never done anything that (B)/ has been worthy for (C)/my admiration and respect (D)/No Error (E)
A
B
C
D
E
Solution:
‘of’ will replace ‘for’ in part (C) of the sentence. ‘Worthy’ is used in terms of ‘worthy of something’ which means ‘deserving something’ but if it’s written ‘for’, it means ‘qualified for something’ or ‘competent for something’. Hence, option (c) is correct answer choice.
Directions (6-10): Read the following passage and answer the questions as directed. There are some blanks given in the passage based on which some questions are framed, and some words are highlighted as well to help you answer some of the questions.
We can intuitively recognise whether an action is ethical or not. Let us look at the theoretical basis of understanding ethics with an example. A cigarette company wants to decide on launching a new product, whose primary ……………………(A) is reduced tar. It plans to tell customers that the lower tar content is a ‘healthier’ option. This is only half true.
(B) In reality, a (1)flavour may have to (2) inhale more frequently from a cigarette with (3)lower tar to get the (4)smoker of a regular cigarette.
Let us analyse this from three dominant ethical perspectives
(C)First, the egoistic perspective state that we take actions that resulting in the greatest good for oneself. The cigarette company is likely to sell more cigarettes, assuming that the new product wins over more new customers. From an egoistic perspective, hence, the company should launch the new cigarette.
Second, the utilitarian perspective states that we take actions that result in the greatest good for all. Launching the new cigarette is good for the company. The new brand of cigarette also …………….. (D) a ‘healthier’ choice for smokers. And more choice is good for customers. Hence, the company should launch the product.
The egoistic and utilitarian perspectives together form the ‘teleological perspective’, where the focus is on the results that achieve the greatest good.
Third, the ‘deontological perspective’, on the other hand, focuses more on the intention (E) of the maker than the results. The company deceives the customer when it says that the new cigarette is ‘healthier’. Knowingly endangering the health of humans is not an ethical intention. So, the company should not launch this cigarette.
Q6. Which of the following word given in the options should come at the place marked as (A) in the above passage to make it grammatically correct and meaningful? Also, the word should fill in the two sentences given below to make them contextually correct and meaningful.
1. For your convenience, we have added a …………..that allows you to pay your bills over the Internet.
2. The auto scaling …………. changes the x and y axis of your graph to fit the available data.
Adamant
Feature
Accretion
Duress
Ebullient
Solution:
In the above blank, option (b) will be the most suitable word to make it grammatically and contextually correct. Also, the word is suitably fit into the given two sentences.
(a) Adamant- Impervious to pleas, requests, persuasion or reason
(b) Feature- A distinctive attribute or aspect of something
(c) Accretion- An increase by natural growth or addition
(d) Duress-compulsory force or threat
(e) Ebullient- joyously unrestrained
Q7. The sentence given in (B) has four words given in bold. Amongst the given bold words which of the followings must replace each other to make the sentence contextually correct and meaningful?
1-4
2-3
1-2
3-4
None of these
Solution:
In the given sentence in (B), words (2) and (3) are correctly positioned but (1) and (4) are not suitably placed making the sentence contextually incorrect. Swapping both make the sentence correct. The sentence after swapping (1) and (4) is “In reality, a smoker may have to inhale more frequently from a cigarette with lower tar to get the flavour of a regular cigarette.” Hence, option (a) is correct answer choice.
Q8. In the above passage, sentence (C) is italicized. There may or may not be error in one part of the sentence, select the part having error it in.
First, the egoistic perspective state that we take actions
That result in the
Greatest good for oneself
Both (a) and (b)
None of these
Solution:
The error lies in option (a). ‘state’ will be replaced by ‘states’ because the subject ‘The egoistic perspective’ is singular. Hence, option (a) is right answer choice.
Q9. Which of the following should fill the blank given in (D) to make it contextually correct and meaningful?
Arrogate- seize and take control without authority
Imputing- attribute or credit to
Paradigm- a standard or typical example
