Example: AIADMK factions bury the hatchet.

1. Hatchet [hach-it]/ कुल्हाड़ी
Noun: a small, short-handled ax having the end of the head opposite the blade in the form of a hammer, made to be used with one hand; a tomahawk; hatchetfish.
Verb: to cut, destroy, kill, etc., with a hatchet; to abridge, delete, excise, etc.
Synonyms: machete, bill, billhook, tomahawk.

Example: Even as the two factions came together after six months, 18 legislators expressed support to “ousted” deputy general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran and sought an appointment with Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao on Tuesday.

2. Faction [fak-shuh n] / गुट
Noun: a group or clique within a larger group, party, government, organization, or the like; party strife and intrigue; dissension.
Synonyms: block, clan, gang, junta, minority, party, sect, side, wing, band, bunch, cabal, camp, caucus, cell, circle.
Antonyms: individual, whole, agreement, conformity.

Example: Sources close to the Deputy Chief Minister said Mr. Modi had wished him all success in his endeavour towards the development and progress of Tamil Nadu and assured him all support.

3. Endeavour [en-dev-er] / उद्यम करना
Verb: to exert oneself to do or effect something; make an effort; strive; to attempt; try; to attempt to achieve or gain.
Noun: a strenuous effort; attempt.
Synonyms: aim, effort, enterprise, struggle, undertaking, venture, essay, exertion, fling, go, header, labor, lick.
Antonyms: idleness, inactivity, passivity, entertainment.

Example: The portfolios of some other Ministers were also changed.

4. Portfolio [pawrt-foh-lee-oh, pohrt-] / पेटिका
Noun: a flat, portable case for carrying loose papers, drawings, etc; such a case for carrying documents of a government department; the total holdings of the securities, commercial paper, etc., of a financial institution or private investor; the office or post of a minister of state or member of a cabinet.
Synonyms: bag, briefcase, case, container, envelope, folder, notebook, valise, attaché case, brief bag.

Example: The order was, however, swiftly voided after it caused an outrage.

5. Swift [swift] / तीव्र
Adjective: moving or capable of moving with great speed or velocity; fleet; rapid; coming, happening, or performed quickly or without delay; quick or prompt to act or respond; quick to perceive or understand; smart; clever.
Adverb: swiftly.
Synonyms: expeditiously, hastily, promptly, quickly, rapidly, speedily, fleetly, apace, double-quick, flat-out, full tilt, hotfoot, hurriedly, posthaste, quick, swift.
Antonyms: slowly, sluggishly.

6. Void [void] / निरर्थक
Adjective: Law. having no legal force or effect; not legally binding or enforceable; useless; ineffectual; vain; devoid; destitute (usually followed by of).
Noun: an empty space; emptiness; something experienced as a loss or privation; a gap or opening, as in a wall; a vacancy; vacuum.
Verb: to make ineffectual; invalidate; nullify; to empty; discharge; evacuate; to clear or empty (often followed by of).
Synonyms: abandoned, bare, barren, clear, deprived, drained, emptied, free, lacking, scant, short, shy, bereft, destitute, devoid, tenantless, unfilled.
Antonyms: adequate, enough, full, hindered.

Example: On Sunday, district officials spotted six persons in Jahazpur tehsil defecating in the open and promptly arrested them.

7. Prompt [prompt] / तात्कालिक
Adjective: done, performed, delivered, etc., at once or without delay; ready in action; quick to act as occasion demands; quick or alert; punctual.
Verb: to move or induce to action; to occasion or incite; inspire.
Synonyms: directly, expeditiously, hastily, instantly, quickly, rapidly, speedily, swiftly, pronto, at once, fast, flat-out, fleetly, in nothing flat, lickety-split.
Antonyms: slowly, late, negligently.

Example: Faced with a backlash, Bhilwara Collector Muktanand Agarwal revoked the SDO’s order and clarified that the administration would not take punitive action to meet the ODF village targets under the SBA.

8. Backlash [bak-lash] / प्रतिक्रिया 
Noun: a sudden, forceful backward movement; recoil; a strong or violent reaction, as to some social or political change.
Verb: to make or undergo a backlash.
Synonyms: reaction, repercussion, resentment, resistance, response, retaliation, backfire, boomerang, counteraction, kickback, recoil, tangle, retroaction.
Antonyms: cause, question.

9. Punitive [pyoo-ni-tiv] / दंडात्मक
Adjective: serving for, concerned with, or inflicting punishment.
Synonyms: disciplinary, penal, punishing, retaliatory, vindictive, punitory, castigating, correctional, in reprisal, in retaliation, retaliative, revengeful.
Antonyms: beneficial, rewarding.

Example: A Home Ministry official told The Hindu that the August 15 skirmish near the Pangong Lake in Ladakh, in which soldiers from the two armies kicked, punched and threw stones at each other, was a “deviant” incident.

10. Skirmish [skur-mish] / मुठभेड़
Noun: Military. a fight between small bodies of troops, especially advanced or outlying detachments of opposing armies; any brisk conflict or encounter
Verb: to engage in a skirmish.
Synonyms: altercation, argument, battle, bout, brawl, clash, combat, conflict, confrontation, disagreement, dispute, encounter, feud, fisticuffs, fracas, melee, quarrel.
Antonyms: accord, agreement, calm, concord.
