1.Thwart-verb
Meaning: prevent (someone) from accomplishing something.
Sentence: In the last four years, British officials have reportedly thwarted at least 13 terror plots.
2.Lament-verb
Meaning: express passionate grief about.
synonyms: mourn, grieve (for/over), weep for, shed tears for
Sentence: The liberal intellectual establishment has of late begun lamenting the steady (and they feel, terminal) decline of the Indian NationalCongress.
3.Extinction-noun
Meaning: the state or process of being or becoming extinct
synonyms: dying out, disappearance, vanishing, death;
Sentence: It has almost unanimously concluded that the main reason for this decline and fall is its vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, and that till he is at the helm of affairs (notwithstanding the party president Sonia Gandhi), the party is heading for extinction.
4.Vanguard-noun
Meaning: a group of people leading the way in new developments or ideas.
Sentence: There are, of course, some who still say that the party which was the vanguard of the freedom movement, and led by giants such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, cannot be junked in the dustbin of history.

5.Sabotage-verb
Meaning: deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct (something), especially for political or military advantage.

Meaning: the pursuit of pleasure; sensual self-indulgence.

Sentence: This info-tech revolution gave rise to consumerism, hedonism and hyper-individualism.
8.Austerity-noun
Meaning: sternness or severity of manner or attitude.

Sentence: The ideas of collectivism (trade unionism, for instance), austerity and simple life, compassion and piety (as reflected in Gandhian values in films such as Jagte Raho , Do Aankhen Barah Haath and Pyaasa ), idealism and faith in goodness began to be seen as outdated.
9.Effervescence-noun
Meaning: bubbles in a liquid; fizz.
Sentence: The effervescence of the Modi mood cannot replace those values, and therefore cannot last for too long.
10.Afflict-verb
Meaning: (of a problem or illness) cause pain or trouble to; affect adversely.
synonyms: trouble, bother, burden, distress, cause trouble to, cause suffering to, beset, harass,
Sentence: It has been afflicted by a strange identity crisis, and in panic it is looking for existential survival in the face of supposed extinction.
