The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For IBPS RRB PO 2017

1. Domain [doh-meyn] :जागीर, प्रदेश, शासन-क्षेत्र, विचार-सीमा
Noun: a field of action, thought, influence, etc.; the territory governed by a single ruler or government; realm; a realm or range of personal knowledge, responsibility, etc.
Synonyms: realm, sphere, territory, authority, bailiwick, concern, demesne, department, discipline.
Antonyms: sky, surrender, yielding.

Example: Chennai city will have no future if plans to fill the Ennore creek go ahead.

2. Creek [kreek, krik] : खाड़ी, छोटी नदी
Noun: a stream smaller than a river; a stream or channel in a coastal marsh.
Synonyms: brook, brooklet, burn, crick, ditch, race, rill, river, rivulet.

Example: But the city shows scant regard for this precious but dangerous resource.

3. Scant [skant] : अपर्याप्त, 
Adjective: barely sufficient in amount or quantity; not abundant; almost inadequate; limited; meager; not large; barely amounting to as much as indicated; having an inadequate or limited supply (usually followed by of).
Verb: to make scant; diminish; to stint the supply of; withhold; to treat slightly or inadequately.
Synonyms: insufficient, mere, paltry, scanty, skimpy, slight, sparse, bare, scrimp, short, skimp, spare, thin.
Antonyms: adequate, ample, enough, important, plentiful.

Example: Nothing speaks more elegantly to Chennai’s death wish than what governments are doing to the wetlands in North Chennai.

4. Wetland [wet-land] :आर्द्रभूमि
Noun: Often, wetlands. land that has a wet and spongy soil, as a marsh, swamp, or bog.
Synonyms: lowland, marshland, fen, marsh, mire, morass, moss, peat.

Example: Two rivers with a total catchment of 5,000 sq km empty into the Ennore Creek.

5. Catchment [kach-muh nt] : जलग्रह
Noun: the act of catching water; something for catching water, as a reservoir or basin; the water that is caught.

Example: But when cyclonic weather pushes the sea surging landwards, or when rainwaters from the two rivers come rushing to meet the sea, the waterspread in the creek swells to its majestic fullness.

6. Surge [surj] : महोर्मि, हिलोरे मारना
Noun: a strong, wavelike, forward movement, rush, or sweep; a strong, swelling, wavelike volume or body of something; a sudden, strong increase or burst.
Synonyms: deluge, flood, flow, growth, outpouring, rise, swell, upsurge, wave.
Antonyms: decline, decrease.

7. Majestic [muh-jes-tik] : आलीशान, भव्य
Adjective: characterized by or possessing majesty; of lofty dignity or imposing aspect; stately; grand.
Synonyms: august, awesome, ceremonious, cool, courtly, dignified, elevated, exalted, fab.
Antonyms: humble, low, lowly, shabby.

Example: It buffers the rich aquifers of the Araniyar-Kosasthalaiyar Basin from the sea, and keeps salt water from invading groundwater resources that supply several hundred million litres daily to Chennai even during the worst droughts.

8. Aquifer [ak-wuh-fer] : जलभृत,  जलीय चट्टानी पर्त
Noun: any geological formation containing or conducting ground water, especially one that supplies the water for wells, springs, etc.
Synonyms: aquifer, water level, artesian basin, artesian spring, sinkhole.

9. Invade [in-veyd] : आक्रमण करना, दुश्मन की तरह हमला करना
Verb: to enter forcefully as an enemy; go into with hostile intent; to enter like an enemy; to enter as if to take possession.
Synonyms: breach, infect, infest, loot, occupy, overrun, penetrate, pillage, plunder, raid, ravage, storm.
Antonyms: aid, assist, give, help, protect, receive, surrender.

Example: The 2015 floods are being used to justify the removal of 55,000 families from the edges of Cooum and Adyar rivers to socially fraught and flood-prone ghettos in wetlands on the city’s fringes.

10. Fringe [frinj] : झालर
Noun: a decorative border of thread, cord, or the like, usually hanging loosely from a raveled edge or separate strip; anything resembling or suggesting this; an outer edge; margin; periphery.
Synonyms: brink, edge, hem, outskirts, perimeter, periphery, skirt, verge.
Antonyms: center, inside, interior, middle.
