Directions (11-15): Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow the passage. Some words may be highlighted to help you some of the questions.

Like all others around them, the visually impaired in Odisha will also welcome the New Year with a new calendar for 2019.

In the past, it was being distributed in the month of January, but this time round the much-needed calendar was printed early and its distribution through post started from the first week of December. “Braille calendars have already reached almost everyone in our mailing list,” said Prakash Chandra Rath, the manager of the Braille press here,
The special Odia calendar and almanac in Braille format named ‘Braille Dinapanjhika 2019’ is meant for free distribution. Since 1992 it is being printed by the ‘Red Cross Computerised Braille Press’ at Berhampur, the only Braille press in Odisha. Printing of the Braille calendar is sponsored by the Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Department of the Odisha government.
All universities of the State have been sent five copies of the Braille calendar. Five copies each have also been sent to the State Library and the Odisha Legislative Assembly Library.
All government departments, too, have received copies of the calendar.

Q11. What is different in the distribution of calendar in 2018 as compared to the past?

Calendars have been distributed in the month of December of 2018 but were distributed in the past in the month of January.
Calendars will be distributed in the month of January of 2019 but in the past were distributed in the month of December.
This is the first-time braille calendars were distributed in the state of Odisha.
This is the first-time the Odisha government sponsored the printing of the braille calendars.
None of the above
Solution:
The answer to the question can be derived from the second paragraph ‘In the past, it was being distributed in the month of January, but this time round the much-needed calendar was printed early and its distribution through post from the first week of December.’
From above, it could be understood that option (a) is the correct answer.
Q12. How many Braille presses are there in the state of Odisha?
Zero
One
Two
Three
Not given in the passage
Solution:
The answer to the question can be derived from the third paragraph, specifically from the second sentence ‘Since 1992 it is being printed by the ‘Red Cross Computerised Braille Press’ at Berhampur, the only Braille press in Odisha.’
From above, it could be understood that the state of Odisha has only One Braille Press.
Hence, option (b) is the correct answer.
Q13. How many copies of the Braille calendar have been sent to the government departments?
Three
Four
Five
Zero
Not given in the passage
Solution:
The answer to the question can be derived from the last two paragraphs ‘All universities of the State have been sent five copies of the Braille calendar. Five copies each have also been sent to the State Library and the Odisha Legislative Assembly Library.
All government departments, too, have received copies of the calendar.’
Only number for the copies which have been sent to the Universities of the State, State Library and the Odisha Legislative Assembly Library is given, but not for the copies which have been received by the government departments.
From above, it can be deduced that the answer to the question is not given in the passage.
Hence, option (e) is the correct answer.
Q14. How many among those, who were sent braille calendars, have received the braille calendar till now? Assume that the above passage was written on 30 December 2018.
Everyone has received the braille calendar
Almost No one
Almost Everyone
Braille calendars have yet to be sent.
None of the above
Solution:
The answer to the question can be derived from the last sentence of the second paragraph, ‘Braille calendars have already reached almost everyone in our mail list…’
From above, it can be inferred that the braille calendars have been received to almost everyone among those who have been sent the calendars.
Hence, option (c) is the correct answer.
Q15. Which of the following words have a SYNONYM for the word ‘almanac’?
Gall
Glut
Platitude
Yearbook
Aesthete
Solution:
Almanac [noun] means ‘an annual calendar containing important dates and statistical information such as astronomical data and tide tables’; ‘yearbook’;
Gall [noun] means ‘the trait of being rude and impertinent’;
Glut [noun] means ‘an excess supply’;
Platitude [noun] means ‘a trite or obvious remark’;
Aesthete [noun] means ‘one who professes great sensitivity to the beauty of art and nature’;
From above, it can be deduced that ‘yearbook’ is the SYNONYM for the word ‘almanac’.
Hence, option (d) is the correct answer.
