Directions (1-5): In the following questions few sentences are provided. Identify and mark the sentence which may fail to become the part of the paragraph coherently. Questions containing “none of these” as an option and all the sentences are meaningful and logical with the context of the paragraph mark (e) i.e., “none of these” as your answer choice.

Q1.

Witness Uber’s bowing to the #DeleteUber social media campaign last year. Part of it is to do with the #MeToo movement.
Social Media can bring out the worst in the public by enabling risk-free mob mentality and witch hunts.
But by the same token, it can allow the public to directly punish businesses and business leaders for actions it disagrees with in a manner that simply wasn’t possible before.
Negative market sentiments claimed Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick’s scalp last year.
None of these
Solution:

The sentences can be sequenced as bca to form a coherent paragraph which is describing the powers of social media platform to make or break a business house. However, sentence (d) is specifically mentioning about the case of Uber co-founder, which is irrelevant in context of the coherent paragraph. Hence, option (d) is the most suitable answer choice.

Q2.

Others maintain that the increase is not enough, that the government has not delivered on its promise of announcing MSPs that are 50% over cost, as had been recommended by the National Commission on Farmers (Swaminathan Commission).
Some analysts believe that the increase has been excessive, that it will push up inflation, both directly and also indirectly via the fiscal burden of higher subsidies.
Cost of production is only one of several considerations factored into the determination of MSPs, such as the estimated demand-supply balance, global prices, etc.
The recent increase in the minimum support prices (MSP) for major kharif crops has reignited the debate about food price policy.
None of these
Solution:

The correct sequence of the sentences to form a coherent paragraph is dba, which is describing about the opinions and reactions of analysts on the increase on Minimum Support Prices (MSP). However, sentence (c) is merely mentioning the factors considered while determining of MSPs, thus, it fails to find the relevance with the other sentences. Hence, option (c) is the most viable answer choice.

Q3.

Since state governments are increasingly raising resources from the bond market, higher issuance can complicate fiscal management.
The share of market borrowing in the financing of fiscal deficit is expected to top 90% in the current year, compared with about 61% in 2015-16.
This will enable higher investment and help attain higher sustainable growth.
The maturity profile of state government bonds shows that redemption pressure has started increasing since the last fiscal.
None of these
Solution:

The sentences can be sequenced as abd to form a coherent paragraph, which is describing about the stare government’s borrowings through bond market which may cause difficulties in fiscal management. However, sentence (c) mentions that a solution [This] will enable higher investment, but the solution has not been mentioned in the paragraph which would have acted as a linking sentence to form sentence (c) as a part of coherent paragraph. Hence, option (c) is the most feasible answer choice.

Q4.

As the Lok Sabha debates the vote of no confidence, representatives of farmers from across the country will be marching outside Parliament under the banner of All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), an umbrella body of 201 farmer organisations.
Farmers have already passed a vote of no confidence against this government.
Far from helping the farmers, this government has actually harmed them in their hour of crisis. This is a strong indictment, backed by solid evidence.
Further, the government has effectively bypassed this law in the land acquisitions done by central agencies like the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and has also allowed State governments to nullify the provisions benefitting the land-owning farmers.
None of these
Solution:

The sequence of the paragraph after rearranging the coherent sentences is abc. The paragraph is describing about the protest by farmers against the government policies that fail to protect the farmers in the hour of crisis. However, sentence (d) is not giving any coherence to the paragraph. Therefore, option (d) becomes the most viable answer choice.

Q5.

Already they are present in the form of thermocol, dust and in some cases; they are now used in making fatty oils.
Government authorities have to understand the importance of the order of Plastic Ban in a nutshell – UP is the largest and the most populated state, plastic is in use in every corner of the state, even in the remotest area. It’s been in use for more than 30 years in different forms.
In winters, poor burn plastic to get some warmth. Gases which emit from this burning are poisonous and directly affect our lungs. In a nutshell, it is the most dangerous man-made material in this world.
This is the most dangerous aspect of it, because this oil goes directly to the consumer leading to health disaster in many ways.
None of these
Solution:

All the sentences together form a coherent paragraph in the sequence of badc. The paragraph is describing about the law of plastic ban implemented in the state of UP due to its harmful effects. Therefore, option (e) becomes the most viable answer choice.

Directions (6-10): In the questions given below a sentence is divided into five parts marked A-E. The five parts are jumbled and one of the parts has an error in it. Arrange the divided parts into a coherent sentence and identify the part which has an error in it.

Q6. He had not been ready (A)/ Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said (B)/ To accept the Supreme Court’s verdict (C)/ Should have quit (D)/ Sabarimala chief priest Kandararu Rajeevaru (E).

EDACB; (D)
BEDAC; (C)
DACEB; (C)
BEDAC; (A)
EDACB; (E)
Solution:

The correct coherent sequence is BEDAC.
Upon reading the parts, one gets to understand that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is expressing his opinion on Sabarimala chief priest. So, (B) should be the first part.
The parts (A), (C), (D) and (E) would arrange to form a conditional clause;
The part (E) should provide the subject for the first clause of the conditional clause;
The part (D) should provide the predicate for the first clause of the conditional clause;
The part (A) should be the first part of the second clause of the conditional clause; and
The part (C) should be the second part of the second clause of the conditional clause.
So, the correct coherent sequence is BEDAC.
The tone of the sentence suggests that the sentence is a conditional sentence with the clause ‘he had not been ready to accept the Supreme Court’s verdict’ is a conditional part. The starting part ‘he had not been ready…’ is grammatically incorrect. In the cases of conditional sentences, the correct sentences should be ‘had he not been ready…’ So, there is an error in the part (A) of the sentence.
“Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Sabarimala chief priest Kandararu Rajeevaru should have quit had he not been ready to accept the Supreme Court’s verdict.”
Hence, option (d) is the correct answer.

Q7. Was attempt to checkmate senior BJP leaders (A)/ Mr. Patnaik’s letter to Mr. Modi (B)/ According to political analysts, (C)/ About the BJD government’s performance in Odisha (D)/ From creating any confusion among the people (E)/

BAECD; (C)
AEBCD; No Error
CBAED; (A)
EABCD; (E)
BAECD; (E)
Solution:

The correct coherent sequence is CBAED.
The part (C) should be the first part of the coherent sentence. The part (C) is an adverbial phrase ‘according to political analysts’. A clause should follow the starting adverbial phrase.
The part (B) is a perfect phrase to follow the function of the subject of that clause.
No other parts (A), (D) and (E) could behave as a subject.
The part (A), starting with ‘was attempt’, should follow the part (B).
The part (D) qualifying the phrase ‘confusion among the people’ of the part (E) should follow the part (E), and the sub-sequence ‘ED’ should follow the part (A).
So, the final coherent sequence is CBAED.

There is an error in the part (A) of the sentence. The noun ‘attempt’ is an indefinite Countable Noun which must be preceded by an indefinite article ‘an’.
Hence, option (c) is the correct answer.
According to political analysts, Mr. Patnaik’s letter to Mr. Modi was an attempt to checkmate senior BJP leaders from creating any confusion among the people about the BJD government’s performance in Odisha.

Q8. And something which cannot be stopped (A)/ on the basis of “conjectures and surmises”(B)/ is a “fundamental right” of the party, (C)/ An appeal filed by the BJP said held a “peaceful yatra” (D)/ making voters aware of their rights (E).

DBCAE; No error
EBCAD; No error
DECAB; No error
BDECA; (D)
DECAB; (D)
Solution:

The correct coherent sequence is DECAB.
The part (E) is qualifying the a (grammatically incorrect) noun-phrase ‘held a “peaceful yatra” of the part (D) and is functioning as an adjective phrase to the noun phrase present in the part (D).
So, the part (E) should follow the part (D).
The tone of the sentence suggests that a phrase ‘held a “peaceful yatra”’, part (A), (B), (C) and (E) are forming a clause which would qualify the verb ‘said’.
The part (D) should be the first part of the coherent sentence.
The part (E) should be the second part of the coherent sentence;
The part (C) starting with a verb-phrase should be the third part of the coherent sentence;
The part (A), starting with ‘and’ should follow the part (C).
The part (B) is qualifying the verb ‘stopped’ present in the part (A) and should follow the part (A).
So, the correct coherent sequence is DECAB.
There is an error in the part (D) of the sentence. Please note that the phrase ‘held a “peaceful yatra”’ should be a noun phrase and the phrase ‘making voters aware of their rights’ should be an adjective phrase, which is qualifying the noun phrase ‘held a “peaceful yatra”’.
But a noun phrase is never start with a past-participle verb, i.e., ‘held’. The verb must be a gerund, i.e., ‘holding’.
Hence, option (e) is the correct answer.
An appeal filed by the BJP said holding a “peaceful yatra” making voters aware of their rights is a “fundamental right” of the party, and something which cannot be stopped on the basis of “conjectures and surmises”.

Q9. The Chief Minister is personally (A)/ in the heart of Imphal (B)/ supervising preparations at Hafta Kangjeibung ground (C)/ where Mr. Modi is scheduled (D)/ to address a public meeting (E).

ACBDE; (C)
ACBDE; No error
ACDBE; No error
BCDBE; (C)
DEACB; (A)
Solution:

The correct sequence is ACBDE.
Among the parts (A) and (D), the part (A) is better poised to be the starting phrase of the sentence.
The part (D) is starting with ‘where’, while the part (A) has both a noun and a finite verb.
The trailing part of the part (A) is ‘is personally’. Either the verb following the part ‘is personally’ would be present participle or past participle. The part (C) starting with a present-participle verb provides the correct grammatical sense to the ‘is’ present in the part (A).
So, the part (C) should follow the part (A).
The part (B) is qualifying the phrase ‘at Hafta angjeibung ground’ present in the part (C) and so, the part (B) should follow the part (C).
The part (D) and (E) seem to be forming to an adverbial clause, qualifying the prepositional phrase ‘at Hafta Kangjeibung ground in the heart of Imphal’. The part (D), starting with ‘where’ and providing both subject and verb, and that too, in correct order’, should precede the part (E).
So, the correct sequence is ACBDE.
There is an error in the part (C) of the sentence. Please note that the noun ‘preparations’ is a plural countable noun and must be preceded by the article ‘the’.
Hence, option (a) is the correct answer.
The Chief Minister is personally supervising the preparations at Hafta Kangjeibung ground in the heart of Imphal where Mr. Modi is scheduled to address a public meeting.

Q10. Was introduced by the BJP government (A)/ The group recitation of Vande Matram (B)/ led for (C)/ for the government employees (D)/the then Chief Minister Babulal Gaur in 2005 (E).

ECBDA; (B)
BDACE; (C)
ECBDA; (C)
ECBDA; No Error
DCABE; (B)
Solution:

The coherent sequence of the paragraph is ‘BDACE’.
Among the given parts, parts (B) and (D) combines to give the subject of the sentence.
‘The group recitation of Vande Mantram for the government employees’ makes both grammatical and contextual sense.
So, the part (B) should be the first part of the coherent sentence.
The part (D) should be the second part of the coherent sentence;
The part (A), starting with ‘was’, should follow the subject of the sentence provided by the sub-sequence ‘BD’.
So, the part (A) should be the third part of the coherent sentence.
It seems that the part (C) and the part (E) would combine to qualify the noun phrase ‘the BJP government’ present in the trailing part of the part (A).
It makes more sense for the (grammatically incorrect) part (C) to precede the part (E).
So, the coherent sequence of the paragraph is ‘BDACE’.
There is an error in the part (C).
The usage of the preposition ‘for’ is incorrect as per the context of the sentence; instead, the adverb ‘by’ should have been used.
Hence, option (b) is the correct answer.
The group recitation of Vande Matram for the government employees was introduced by the BJP government led by the then Chief Minister Babulal Gaur in 2005.
