Hindu Newspaper Vocabulary for SBI PO 2017


Hello, Greetings!! SBI PO 2017 will commence in the month of APRIL 2017. In order to help and guide all of you, we're going to post VOCABULARY BASED ON THE HINDU NEWSPAPER. In all the competitive exams, Vocabulary questions are asked from newspapers. 

1.Alchemy
Meaning: the medieval forerunner of chemistry, concerned with the transmutation of matter, in particular with attempts to convert base metals into gold or find a universal elixir
Synonym: chemistry
Sentence:"occult sciences, such as alchemy and astrology"

2.Errant
Meaning: wrong, deviant
Synonym: erratic, stray
Antonym: normal,
Sentence: I saw an errant man shouting at his daughter for skipping office

3.Attrition
Meaning: A wearing down to weaken or destroy
Synonym: erosion, grinding
Antonym: building, happiness
Sentence: The difficulty was to overcome its susceptibility to attrition.

4.Inexorable
Meaning: impossible to stop or prevent.
Synonym: relentless, unstoppable, unavoidable
Antonym: flexible, lenient
Sentence: "the seemingly inexorable march of new technology"

5.Pensive
Meaning: engaged in, involving, or reflecting deep or serious thought.
Synonym: thoughtful, thinking, reflective
Antonym: unreflective
Sentence: "a pensive mood"

6.Solace
Meaning: comfort or consolation in a time of great distress or sadness, give solace to
Synonym: comfort, consolation, cheer, support, relief
Antonym: distress, heartache, heartbreak, torment, torture
Sentence: "she sought solace in her religion"

7.Aloft
Meaning: up in or into the air; overhead.
Synonym: into the sky, skyward, on high, heavenward
Antonym: down
Sentence:"the congregation sways, hands aloft"

8.Ameliorate
Meaning: make (something bad or unsatisfactory) better.
Synonym: improve, amend, better, enhance, enrich
Antonym: damage, endamage, harm, hurt, impair, injure, spoil, tarnish, vitiate
Sentence: "the reform did much to ameliorate living standards

9.Alliteration
Meaning: the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
Sentence: "the alliteration of ‘sweet birds sang’"

10.Alleviate
Meaning: make (suffering, deficiency, or a problem) less severe.
Synonym: reduce, ease, relieve
Antonym: aggravate
Sentence: "he couldn't prevent her pain, only alleviate it"
