The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For IBPS RRB 2017

Example/उदाहरण: The elusive and charismatic snow leopard has lost its endangered status in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, causing genuine worry among wildlife biologists, who believe this sends out the wrong signal to those working to protect it. If the argument for a downgrade to vulnerable status from endangered is that conservation actions have reduced the threat to the cat, there is an equally persuasive response on how little scientists know about its population health, given its remote habitat in the alpine zones of the Himalayas and trans-Himalayas.


1. Elusive [ih-loo-siv]-मायावी/भटकाने वाला
Adjective: eluding or failing to allow for or accommodate a clear perception or complete mental grasp; hard to express or define; cleverly or skillfully evasive; difficult to find.
Synonyms: ambiguous, fleeting, illusory, incomprehensible, puzzling, slippery, subtle, tricky, volatile, baffling, cagey, deceitful, deceptive, difficult to catch, elusory, equivocal, evanescent, fallacious, fraudulent, fugacious, fugitive, greasy, imponderable, indefinable, insubstantial, intangible, misleading.
Antonyms: definite, honest, intelligible, stable.
2. Charismatic [kar-iz-mat-ik]-करिश्माई 
Adjective: of, having, or characteristic of charisma; characterizing Christians of various denominations who seek an ecstatic religious experience, sometimes including speaking in tongues and instantaneous healing.
Noun: a Christian who emphasizes such a religious experience.
Synonyms: appealing, alluring, hypnotic, larger than life, magnetic, mesmerizing, poised.

3. Alpine [al-pahyn, -pin]-अल्पाइन/पेड जो पर्वतीय क्षेत्र में पाये जाते हैं 
Adjective: of, pertaining to, on, or part of any lofty mountain; very high; elevated.
Synonyms: aerial, elevated, high, high-reaching, in the clouds, lofty, montane, mountainous, rangy, snowcapped, soaring, towering.

Example/उदाहरण: India handled the problem of the cat preying on goats, sheep, donkeys and other animals by roping in communities in conservation, and compensating them for any losses.

4. Rope [rohp]-रस्सी/मजबूत 
Noun: a strong, thick line or cord, commonly one composed of twisted or braided strands of hemp, flax, or the like, or of wire or other material.
Verb: to tie, bind, or fasten with a rope; to enclose, partition, or mark off with a rope or ropes (often followed by off); to catch with a lasso; lasso.
Synonyms: attach, connect, cover, dress, handcuff, restrict, shackle, stick, strap, tether, tie up, unite, wrap, adhere, bandage, border, chain, cinch.
Antonyms: disconnect, forget, lay bare, remove.

Example/उदाहरण: The message was muddled.

5. Muddle [muhd-l]-गड़बड़ी/अव्यवस्था 
Verb: to mix up in a confused or bungling manner; jumble; to cause to become mentally confused; to cause to become confused or stupid with or as if with an intoxicating drink; to make muddy or turbid, as water.
Synonyms: blurred, chaotic, convoluted, disorganized, jumbled, messy, addled, befuddled, bewildered, dazed, disarranged, disarrayed, disordered, scrambled, disorderly, in disarray, mixed up.
Antonyms: ordered, organized, systematic, clear.

Example/उदाहरण: The comfortable position that the grand coalition had after 2013 was winnowed down to a mere 54%.

6. Winnow [win-oh]-फटकना/भूसा
Verb: to free (grain) from the lighter particles of chaff, dirt, etc., especially by throwing it into the air and allowing the wind or a forced current of air to blow away impurities; to drive or blow (chaff, dirt, etc.) away by fanning; to blow upon; fan; to subject to some process of separating or distinguishing; analyze critically; sift.
Synonyms: fan, puff, scatter, stir.

Example/उदाहरण: Two elements animated the swing rightward: a simmering unease toward Muslim immigration and a resentment toward a world that thinks Germany needs to do more in the Eurozone, the European Union (EU), NATO and globally.

7. Simmer [sim-er]-उबाल/क्रोध की अवस्था में बने रहना 
Verb: to cook or cook in a liquid at or just below the boiling point; to make a gentle murmuring sound, as liquids cooking just below the boiling point; to be in a state of subdued or restrained activity, development, excitement, anger, etc.
Synonyms: bubble, burn, churn, ferment, rage, seethe, stew, stir, warm, cook, effervesce, fizz, fret, fricassee.
Antonyms: be happy, cool, soothe, freeze.

Example/उदाहरण: German voters bristled at attempts both at home and internationally to talk more about German leadership.

8. Bristle [bris-uh l]-बाल खड़े करना/कठोर 
Noun: one of the short, stiff, coarse hairs of certain animals, especially hogs, used extensively in making brushes; anything resembling these hairs.
Verb: to stand or rise stiffly, like bristles; to erect the bristles, as an irritated animal (often followed by up); to become rigid with anger or irritation.
Synonyms: bridle, fume, seethe, boil, flare, rage, rise, ruffle, spit, swell, be angry, be infuriated, be maddened, blow up, boil over, flare up, get one's dander up, see red, stand on end.

Example/उदाहरण: As one former Defence Minister quipped wryly, “When Americans or Europeans talk about German ‘leadership,’ they really mean money.”

9. Quip [kwip]-ताना 
Noun: a clever or witty remark or comment; a sharp, sarcastic remark; a cutting jest; a quibble; an odd or fantastic action or thing.
Verb: to utter quips.
Synonyms: defy, disregard, mock, repudiate, scorn, spurn, affront, deride, gibe, gird, insult, jeer, outrage, quip, ridicule, scoff, slight, sneer, taunt.
Antonyms: approve, commend, compliment, flatter.

10. Wry [rahy]-राइ/एक विरूपण द्वारा उत्पादित 
Adjective: produced by a distortion or lopsidedness of the facial features; abnormally bent or turned to one side; twisted; crooked; devious in course or purpose; misdirected; contrary; perverse; distorted or perverted, as in meaning; bitterly or disdainfully ironic or amusing.
