Example: India and China on Monday declared the de-escalation of the standoff on the Doklam plateau.

1. Standoff [stand-awf, -of] : गतिरोध, एक टाई या ड्रा
Noun: a standing off or apart; aloofness; a tie or draw, as in a game; something that counterbalances; a prop for holding the top of a ladder away from the vertical surface against which it is leaning.
Adjective: standing off or apart; aloof; reserved.
Synonyms: deadlock, impasse, stalemate, level, toss-up, wash, dead heat, drawn battle, even game.
Antonyms: agreement, breakthrough.

Example: South Gujarat reels under deluge.

2. Deluge [del-yooj, -yoozh, del-ooj, -oozh, dih-looj, -loozh] : बाढ़, जल प्रलय
Noun: a great flood of water; inundation; flood; a drenching rain; downpour; anything that overwhelms like a flood.
Verb: to flood; inundate; to overrun; overwhelm.
Synonyms: avalanche, barrage, cataclysm, inundation, spate, torrent, cataract, flux, Niagara, overflowing, overrunning, pour, rush, drencher.

Example: Information technology and data are ingrained in nearly every aspect of today’s businesses.

3. Ingrained [in-greynd, in-greynd] : दीर्घस्थायी, कट्टर 
Adjective: firmly fixed; deep-rooted; inveterate; wrought into or through the grain or fiber.
Synonyms: deep-seated, fixed, implanted, inbred, inherent, innate, intrinsic, rooted, confirmed, indwelling, built-in, chronic, congenital, constitutional, fundamental, hereditary.
Antonyms: acquired, extrinsic, incidental, learned.

Example: Top court sets aside HC order on riot recompense.

4. Recompense [rek-uh m-pens] : बदला चुकाना, इनाम देना
Verb: to repay; remunerate; reward, as for service, aid, etc.; to pay or give compensation for; make restitution or requital for (damage, injury, or the like).
Noun: compensation, as for an injury, wrong, etc.; a repayment or requital, as for favors, gifts, etc; a remuneration or reward, as for services, aid, or the like.
Synonyms: amends, atonement, compensation, cue, damages, emolument, expiation, gravy, indemnification, indemnity, overcompensation, pay, payment, propitiation, quittance, recovery, redemption, redress.
Antonyms: dissatisfaction, penalty, take.

Example: The court expressed satisfaction with the Gujarat government’s scheme to pay up to ₹50,000 as ex-gratia assistance to authorised religious places damaged, destroyed or desecrated during the riots.

5. Ex gratia [eks grey-shee-uh] : अनुग्रहपूर्वक
Adjective: as a favor rather than as a matter of right.

6. Desecrate [des-i-kreyt] : अपवित्रता के साथ व्यवहार करना
Verb: to divest of sacred or hallowed character or office; to divert from a sacred to a profane use or purpose; to treat with sacrilege; profane.
Synonyms: defile, dishonor, pervert, pillage, profane, ravage, befoul, blaspheme, contaminate, desolate, despoil, devastate, devour, pollute, prostitute.
Antonyms: honor, protect, purify, build.

Example: India must engage China a lot more. The BRICS meet is a good occasion to initiate a dedicated backchannel.

7. Backchannel : एक गुप्त, अनौपचारिक चैनल 
Noun: a secret, unofficial, or informal channel of communication as used in politics or diplomacy.

Example: Even as several significant questions remain unanswered about the terms and conditions of the resolution, it provides New Delhi and Beijing an opportunity to reflect over what went wrong and rejig this important bilateral relationship.

8. Rejig [riːˈdʒɪɡ] : पुन: व्यवस्थित करना
Verb: to re-equip (a factory or plant); to rearrange, alter, or manipulate, sometimes in a slightly unscrupulous way
Noun: the act or process of rejigging.

Example: The most self-evident lesson from the Doklam stand-off is that we inhabit a ‘self-help’ world wherein China is a world power — India is on its own and would have to fend for itself in case of a clash with China, a country with which every major state in the international system has a robust economic relationship.

9. Fend [fend] : बचाव करना
Verb: to ward off (often followed by off); to defend; to resist or make defense; to parry; fence; to shift; provide.
Synonyms: bulwark, cover, dodge, guard, oppose, parry, protect, repel, resist, safeguard, screen, secure, shield.

Example: New Delhi, therefore, must carefully review the scenarios and consider its options before upping the ante.

10. Ante [an-tee] : अग्रिम में भुगतान की गई राशि
Noun: an amount of money paid in advance to insure an individual's share in a joint business venture.
Synonyms: pay, pot, price, stake.
